Dissecting The Internet’s Lynching Culture

Warning: highly opinionated and may be offensive to most readers.

I watch a lot of videos online. Internet memes are my guilty pleasure. I’m addicted to 4chan even though I don’t completely understand how to use it. I love dogs, especially my bichon.

I’m also constantly surprised by people’s stupidity. Read the rest of this entry »

Memes, Addictions, Offensive Humor, and Delicious Bookmarks Du Jour

December 23, 2009

While trolling the internet for some sort of mathematical equation/scientific breakdown/secret weapon to successful viral internet success, I began searching memes. What are memes? In my words, some muttering about cult-ish internet popularity (..?). Luckily, Current.com describes it better: “an on-running internet joke that can start anywhere: a news story, a picture, a video or even a celebrity’s fashion choice.”

This search for world domination via internet also lead me to discover 4chan.org and its infamous /b/ forum: utterly offensive, yet strangely captivating and deliciously hilarious (if you’re sick like me). This forum is apparently the launching pad for most popular memes, as most memes started there. The forum’s millions of viewers (with equally sick senses of humor) are applauded for turning random funny stuff into internet sensations.

Some of my fave memes this past year (some older and just discovered this past year) include the following:

1) Balloon Boy… and more than Balloon Boy? this parody.

2) Three Wolves Moon
I hadn’t heard of this one until Dwight wore it in an episode of the office. The best part of it is the amazing satirical comments on amazon.com like “Pros: Fits my girthy frame, has wolves on it, attracts women. Cons: Only 3 wolves (could probably use a few more on the ‘guns’), cannot see wolves when sitting with arms crossed, wolves would have been better if they glowed in the dark.”

3) Chuck Norris
The hilarious site Chuck Norris Facts teaches valuable lessons, like: “There is no ‘ctrl’ button on Chuck Norris’s computer. Chuck Norris is always in control;” “Chuck Norris does not get frostbite. Chuck Norris bites frost;” and “When Chuck Norris falls in water, Chuck Norris doesn’t get wet. Water gets Chuck Norris.”

4) Rick Rolled
This apparently started as a way to play a trick on people: you’d be sent a link claiming to be one thing, and it would instead send you to the Rick Astley video, Never Gonna Give You Up. Rumor has it the song was chosen because it was considered the worst song ever… little did the creator know its the best song EVER! (am I the only lame one who loves this song??)

5) Imma let you finish
Unless you were hiding under a rock… imma let you finish, but knowyourmeme.com has the best meme list…

6) Susan Boyle

Yeah, this video made still makes me cry.
