The Apple iPad

January 28, 2010

As you know, the highly buzzed about Apple tablet, iPad, was released yesterday. Here are two blog posts: 1) Specs and Info 2)Considerations for Website Owners

The Apple iPad: A First Look

There has been a lot of buzz around the Apple Tablet these past few months, mainly because the people at Apple kept all the info uber exclusive. Rumors and speculation bred rampantly over forums and blogs, nothing more than mere hearsay because nothing official had been released from the Apple camp… that is until today.

At an Apple product event, it was announced the rumored Apple tablet, called the iPad, does in fact exist and is to be expected in stores by July 2010. It will come with its very own app store and over 1,400 apps. You will be able to surf the web, read books, listen to music, watch video, paint, play, get directions, take notes, keep up to date with your calendar and contacts, and of course – pick up your email.

Apple iPad: What This Means For Your Website

After a lot of buzz, Apple’s tablet named the iPad launched today to some seriously good reviews. People are expecting it will revolutionize the way we think of computing and accessing the internet. As a web site owner, webmaster or developer of a site this means some interesting changes and considerations for you.

For starters, the iPad is 9.56″ tall and 7.47″ wide, with a depth of just 0.5″ and a weight of 1.5 pounds. Units with the 3G option weigh 1.6 pounds. The screen has a resolution of 1024 x 768 (132 pixels per inch) on a 9.7″ (diagonal) display. It will play 720p HD video at 30 frames per second, though true 720p resolution is 1280 x 720.

Two things worth considering for your website are as follows:

1) When the iPhone came out, everyone had to rethink their website for the tiny web browsers. Now, we may need to rethink our websites for the 10″ screen also. What sorts of considerations will you now need to make on your website?

2) While you will be able to watch HD videos on YouTube via the iPad, it does not support Flash. Most think this should not be an issue because of the shift to HTML 5; however, if your are now or are considering in the future using Flash on your website – this may be an issue.
